How to Choose a Life Raft

Six decisions settle almost every purchase. Get these right and the model picks itself.

01

Capacity

Rate to everyone aboard on your busiest day, not your average trip. Rafts are sold by person count - 4, 6, 8, 10, 12+. Rated capacity is tight by design; when in doubt, size up one.

4 · 6 · 8 · 10 · 12+ person
02

Valise vs. Canister

Valise - soft bag, lighter, stows in a locker or lazarette; protect it from weather and UV. Canister - hard case, deck- or cradle-mounted, weatherproof, and can auto-deploy with a hydrostatic release.

Stowage decides this
03

Coastal vs. Offshore

Coastal rafts are lighter, for quick rescue near shore. Offshore rafts add larger ballast, an insulated double floor, and a boarding ramp for surviving days, not hours, in a seaway.

Match to your distance offshore
04

Certification

SOLAS - highest, for commercial/inspected vessels. ISO 9650-1 offshore / -2 inshore for recreation. ISAF/World Sailing for offshore racing. Check what your use - or your race - requires.

SOLAS · ISO 9650 · ISAF · USCG
05

Survival Pack

The gear packed inside sets your endurance. SOLAS A is the fullest; SOLAS B and coastal packs carry less. More water, flares, and rations = longer you can wait for rescue.

06

Servicing

A raft is only rated while it's in date. Plan on inspection every 1-3 years at an approved station - check the manufacturer interval before you buy, and buy where you can service.
